The Basic Differences Between Whey and Casein Protein

Differences Between Whey and Casein Protein

Whey protein is a type of protein that is most commonly used and the cheaper product compared to casein. Whey has a close to perfect combination of amino acids and they are absorbed quickly
timthumbwhich is exemplary to use directly after the workout for recovery and in addition build muscle.

Three different types of whey protein:

Whey protein concentrate (WPC) contains low levels of fat and low levels of carbohydrates (lactose). The percentage of protein in WPC depends on how concentrated it is. Lower end concentrates tend to have 30% protein and higher end up to 90%.

Whey protein isolate (WPIs) are further processed in the production to remove all the fat and lactose. WPI contains a value of at least 90% protein.

Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) is considered to be the ‘predigested’ form of whey protein as it has already undergone partial hydrolysis – a process necessary for the body to absorb protein.

Casein is referred to the slower type of the two.  By slower it means that the uptake takes longer time to digest than the faster working whey protein which is excellent to use after a workout.

Three types of Casein protein:

Calcium, is the most common type of casein, and most often used as a supplement prior night’s sleep to get a continuous supply of amino acids spread over several hours. Casein texture is relatively viscous, which is valuable in t
he diet as it more filling.

Micellar casein, is the most natural and least processed form of casein, with the same proportions as milk.  Micellar Casein takes longer time to break it down into more steps, thereby the digestions is slower.

Triple phased casein contains three different kinds of proteins with different rapid uptake.  Casein as the slower of the two, while whey and the third component. egg protein are more quickly absorbed.

Consequently, when you want a quicker protein source, whey might be the best option because it increases the protein synthesis faster in the muscle than casein does. Casein on the other hand is beneficial when you want a protein supplement that is released over a longer period of time, and can thereby be a good protein source during long working hours or when you are going to bed. Aside from basic foods a combination of both whey and casein protein supplements can be great choice when it comes to gaining muscles.
