Eugen SandowEugen Sandow, born in Königsberg in Preussen, was a physical performer and a pioneer of bodybuilding and fitness. 

Eugen Sandow or actually (Friedrich Wilhelm Müller), was born April 2, 1867 by a Russian mother and a German father. Later on in life Sandow was faced by doing mandatory military service. Since he wanted to avoid it, he left Preussen in 1885 and traveled throughout Europe.

As years went by Sandow’s fascination for greek statues and athletic gladiators grew stronger. In addition Sandow decided to to start with strength training.

As time went by Sandow got employed by circus director Florenz Ziegfeld for the purpose of performing strength demonstrations. Sandow quickly reached great popularity among the audience for his muscular physique and strength exhibitions.

In the late 19th century he was often filmed and participated in several short films. In 1901 he organized the first bodybuilding competition in London.

Since Sandow has made a tremendous impact in the history of bodybuilding, the Weider brothers decided to sculpture the Mr. Olympia trophy of him.

Sandow died on October 14, 1925 in London, and is known as the “Father of Modern Bodybuilding”.
