Country: US
State: Florida
City: Orlando
Age: 35
Occupation: Bombshell Regional coach and athlete
Division: Bikini
Height: 5’5
RM: Shandy, when and where did your interest for gym training begin?
SO: I was in a dark place in my life after two failed shoulder surgeries causing my career as a ultrasonographer to end. A friend of mine took me to Bombshell camp where I met an amazing group of women who were just as beautiful on the inside as they were on the outside. That was all the inspiration I needed to make the positive changes in my life and get in the gym.
RM: What does a day in Shandy´s life look like from the time you get up and go to bed?
SO: Fasted cardio first thing in the
RM: What does your weekly training schedule look like?
SO: I train 3 times a day 5 days a week during competition prep. I do an hour of cardio in the morning and an hour of cardio at night. My cardio is constantly changing from different machines, outdoor runs and plyos. This keeps my body from getting too comfortable and also keeps me from getting bored doing the same thing all the time. If I am not on prep I only perform one cardio session a day. I weight train daily always changing from body part, weight, repetition and sets.
RM: In your opinion, what makes a successful bikini competitor?
SO: I believe there are many things that make up a successful bikini competitor. I firmly believe I am only as good as my coach and I am definitely blessed with amazing coaches! Of course willpower, dedication and trust is needed to follow through with coach’s orders. I am also blessed to have a very supportive family and that has been huge for me. Mental toughness and balance are a couple other things that help to make a successful bikini competitor.
RM: When are you planning to compete again?
SO: I am two weeks out from an ACL reconstruction so I had to end my season early. I have a long road of recovery ahead but with the help of my doctor and coaches, my goal is to be back on stage mid summer at the latest.
RM: Which movie has been your favorite this year, and why this one in particular?
SO: Generation Iron! I have spent many cardio sessions watching it. This movie speaks to me and motivates me like no other! I feel like it directly draws out the beast in my inner athlete. So many of the people I look up to are featured in this movie and I can relate with them from the training all the way to the stage.
RM, Ok time for the round up of this interview, if there is anything you want to add or someone you want to give a shout out, please go ahead!
SO: I want to thank Team Bombshell and my Coaches, Shannon Dey, Asia Mendoza, and Gennifer Strobo. This team of amazing women goes above and beyond the definition of a coach. They have turned me into an athlete, believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself and helped me unleash an inner strength that I had buried a long time ago. I want to thank Jimmy Mentis who has been an amazing mentor this last year. I
Thank you to Jason Sinclair and Eric Haritakis at Zen Body Foods for my custom gourmet meals delivered to my doorstep.
