Carl Yngvar Christensen, (24) from (Norway) wrote history this weekend by setting a new all-time world record, he was the first to squat 490 kg / 1080lbs.

Carl Yngvar Christensen did also set a single-ply world record in both squat and total, in addition to a new European record deadlift, at the IPF worlds today.

Squat: 490kg/1080lbs (previous record at 485kg)

Bench Press: 350kg/771.6lbs

Deadlift: 390kg/860lbs

Total: 1230kg/2711.7lbs (previous world record at 1200kg)

Carl Yngvar Christensen (born 22 June 1990 in Elverum ) is a Norwegian weightlifter who competes for Brumunddal Atletklubb . He started his training career in 2005 , and is one of Norway’s leading weightlifters. He is 1.87 meters tall with a bodyweight of 168 kg.

Carl Yngvar Christensen is on the national team in powerlifting under the renowned association IPF ( International Powerlifting Federation ).

Carl Yngvar Christensen has all the Norwegian records for junior and senior in weight class +120 kg, as well as a world record in squats , and a European record in deadlift and combined for seniors in the same weight class. His personal records are as follows :

At the World Powerlifting Championships in Denver, USA in November 2014, he became senior world champion for the first time, with a total of 1230 kilos, which is the most a powerlifter has ever lifted in total. He also won the prize for best promise in all classes in this championship only 0.1 points ahead of number 2. He also has a bronze medal from the World Games 2013

He also took silver overall at the 2013 World Cup, which was held in Stavanger. In the same competition, he won gold in the squat and deadlift. As a 16-year-old, Carl Yngvar Christensen was at the top of the world in snowboarding but had to give up due to a knee injury.

The 23-year-old Carl Yngvar Christensen aka “King Carl” set a new IPF world record in the 120kg+ class with a squat of 475kg on his third attempt. That’s 1047lbs. Damn, this guy is a beast. And he’s still a junior. If he does not get hurt, I am sure the 500kg is in the cards.

The entire Norwegian national powerlifting team is pressing the horizontal bar. Still, that squat looked solid. I watched the live stream, and his second attempt was also a new record at 467.5 kg, and it just flew up. The sky is the limit for this guy.

Apart from being an IPF record, Carl Yngvar Christensen also surpasses the heaviest squat achieved at the Super Cup of Titans (an untested but IPF-like competition) – more than Malanichev’s 480 kg squat. H. Thomason also squatted 480 kg, but I am not sure if that’s below IPF specs. All are amazing squats, but CYC claimed the highest single-ply squat of all time, regardless of the federation. It will be interesting to see if Malan reclaims that title at this year’s Super Cup of Titans. His unprocessed squat suggests he could be near 500 kg in the single-ply squat as well.
